Celebrate Walsall’s iconic hippo with fun-filled day of art and community at The New Art Gallery

On Saturday 12 September 2026, the people of Walsall are invited to The New Art Gallery Walsall for a drop-in event to mark the launch of an exciting new art trail coming next year.
Join Walsall Council between 11am and 3pm, alongside Urban Hax and RicNic, for an inspiring exhibition of artworks created during the summer by young people from across the borough.
The artwork on display, inspired by Walsall’s iconic hippo, will directly feed into the development of a new hippo-themed art trail set to arrive in 2027.
“ I am delighted to be launching the Walsall Hippo Trail and it’s great to see art, culture and creativity form such a key part of our regeneration plans for the borough.
This launch event is an excellent opportunity for children, families and young people to come together, share in Walsall’s heritage and be a part of something really exciting. I can’t wait to see the sculptures take shape over the coming months, and to launch the trail next year. “
Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the artworks, hear the stories behind them, and participate in a series of fun, inclusive workshops including drawing, clay sculpture, zine making, and leather craft all inspired by Walsall’s beloved hippo. Attendees of all ages are encouraged to get creative and contribute their own artwork to the project, helping shape Walsall’s new iconic sculpture trail.
This event is part of the broader Walsall Creative Health project, which aims to enhance wellbeing through arts, community engagement, and active outdoor experiences.
The event promotes community connection, wellbeing, and local pride through the power of art. This is a free, family-friendly event everyone is welcome to join the celebration of community, heritage, and creativity.
