Camera targeted in arson attack days after installation in Walsall

A CCTV camera in Walsall has been targeted by arsonists just days after being installed.
The camera was deployed on Hawbush Road in Bloxwich on 13 March 2026 as part of efforts to tackle fly-tipping in the area. Following the incident, the unit had to be removed from the site.
Walsall Council is calling on residents to come forward with any information they may have in relation to the incident and any associated fly-tipping activity in the area.
The arson attack took place at 9pm on 17 March 2026 and has since been reported to the police. Damage was caused to the lighting column which the camera was attached to. The camera itself however was left undamaged and will be redeployed.
The camera formed part of a wider network of enforcement tools used to monitor known hotspots, identify offenders and gather evidence to support enforcement action. In total, 71 cameras are deployed across Walsall to tackle littering and fly-tipping, including covert cameras used in more challenging locations.
Incidents of this nature highlight the ongoing challenges associated with tackling environmental crime. Despite this, the number of littering fines issued and paid between July 2025 and February 2026 has increased by 18 per cent compared to the same period the previous year.
Where damage or interference with enforcement equipment occurs, alternative approaches including covert surveillance are considered to ensure continued enforcement activity.
A Walsall Council spokesperson said, “Anyone with any information relating to this incident is urged to contact Walsall Council or Crimestoppers anonymously to stop future incidents like this happening.”
Walsall Council can be contacted on communityprotection@walsall.gov.uk or by calling 01922 653060. Crimestoppers can be contacted on 0800 555 111.
