The UK Health Security Agency (in partnership with the Met Office) has issued an amber heat health alert for the West Midlands, in place from 8 July 2026. This means weather impacts are likely to be felt across the health and social care system, with increased risks to vulnerable people.

High temperatures can pose a risk to health, particularly for older adults, babies and young children, and people with long-term health conditions.

Residents are advised to:

  • Keep indoor spaces cool by closing curtains, blinds and windows exposed to direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day.
  • Check on vulnerable family members, friends and neighbours, particularly those who live alone or have existing health conditions.
  • Drink plenty of fluids regularly.
  • Wear loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing.
  • Apply sunscreen and seek shade when outdoors.
  • Avoid strenuous activity during peak temperatures, typically between 11am and 3pm.
  • Carry water when travelling or spending time outdoors.
  • Never leave babies, young children, older people, or pets in parked vehicles.

Residents should also take care when around open water such as canals, lakes or other waterways. For further advice, visit the West Midlands Fire Service website. (opens in new tab)

It is important to recognise the signs of heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Symptoms can include dizziness, weakness, headaches, feeling sick and excessive thirst. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should move to a cool place, drink fluids and rest.

Parents and carers are advised to take extra precautions with babies and young children, who can become unwell more quickly in hot weather.

For health advice, visit NHS 111 online or call 111. In an emergency, call 999.
