Aldridge takeaway fined following inspection by Environmental Health officers

Published on

A takeaway in Aldridge that temporarily closed following an unannounced routine inspection by Walsall Council Environmental Health officers has been fined.

Prosecutions

Ruby Express on Walsall Wood Road, Aldridge voluntarily closed on the evening of 13 March 2024 after officers observed mouse droppings and found the premises in a generally dirty and greasy condition. The premises also had no running water due to a broken boiler and previously had a poor food hygiene record in an earlier inspection on 11 January 2023.

Officers deemed the conditions to pose an imminent risk to public health and offered a voluntary closure, which was accepted by the business operators, Mr Hing Lo and Miss Shena Lo. The business remained closed while necessary improvements were made and reopened on 18 March 2024.

A hearing at Dudley Magistrates Court took place on 21 May 2025 with officers and the defendants in attendance. Mr Lo pleaded guilty to all matters and the court imposed a fine of £1,181. The business was also ordered to pay £3,219 in costs and a £472 victim surcharge.

“ Food businesses have a responsibility to operate safely and hygienically. When they fall short, our environmental health officers will take action. We welcome the cooperation shown by the operators in this case and look forward to seeing the improvements. “
