70 littering fines paid as enforcement action continues
Published on
Walsall Council has continued its enforcement action against littering, with 70 offenders paying littering fines between 26 August and 23 September.
Over the same period, the council issued a further 123 Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) as part of ongoing efforts to keep the borough clean. Anyone issued with an FPN must pay within 14 days. Failure to do so, following a reminder, may result in the case being progressed through court.
Council officers continue to hear a range of excuses from people issued with FPNs. Recent examples include:
- “It accidentally fell out of the vehicle.”
- “You made a mistake, I never got out of my car to drop the litter.”
- “I'm sorry for committing the offence, it won't happen again, can you waive the fine?”
Councillor Ian Benton, Portfolio Holder for Street Scene and Enforcement, said: “It is encouraging to see our enforcement activity continuing to identify and tackle littering across the borough, with 70 fines already paid during this period.
“However, it is disappointing that we continue to see this level of littering and that, as an authority, we continue to catch so many disrespecting our home.
“We will continue to use enforcement where necessary, alongside our wider work to keep Walsall clean and encourage people to take responsibility for their waste.”
Residents can dispose of waste legally at the borough’s Household Waste Recycling Centres at Fryers Road, Bloxwich, and Middlemore Lane, Aldridge, which accept general waste, recycling and bulky items. A bulky waste collection service is also available for households unable to transport larger items.
Families requiring additional bin capacity due to growing households or medical needs can apply for a larger bin through the council’s website.
Residents can report fly-tipping online via the council’s website (opens in new tab)or by calling 01922 653355.
