150k of counterfeit goods seized at Bescot Market

Walsall Council’s Trading Standards team has seized approximately £150,000 worth of counterfeit goods from three stalls at Bescot Market.

The joint operation, with West Midlands Police and representatives from private-sector brand protection teams, took place on Sunday December 7

Items seized included counterfeit clothing and fake Apple AirPods, many of which pose significant safety concerns. Counterfeit electrical goods often use poor-quality components that can overheat, malfunction or cause hearing damage, placing consumers at real risk.

This enforcement action forms part of a long-running partnership between Walsall Trading Standards, the National Markets Group (NMG), and Walsall Football Club, aimed at reducing the sale of illegal and unsafe goods.

Significant progress has been made at the market in recent years. Through close collaboration and regular engagement, the number of stalls selling counterfeit products has fallen dramatically, from around 30 stalls in 2020 to just 3 in 2025.

“ Bescot Market has made huge strides in recent years, and we recognise the hard work of the market operator and Walsall FC in helping to tackle counterfeit trading.

“Counterfeit goods undermine legitimate businesses and can be dangerous for consumers. Electrical products in particular can put people at risk of fire, shock or hearing injury.

“This operation shows that while the situation has improved massively, we will continue working with our partners to ensure counterfeit and unsafe items have no place in Walsall. “

Councillor Adam Hicken, Portfolio Holder for Enforcement and Safe Communities

Walsall Council will continue its joint work with NMG, the market operator and West Midlands Police to maintain compliance and protect consumers.

Residents who suspect counterfeit goods are being sold can report concerns via the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 0808 223 1133.
