Mayoral events

Mayor Making

This is normally the second Monday in May, and is held in the Council Chamber. The Mayor and Deputy Mayor are elected, followed by a buffet supper for councillors and local dignitaries in Walsall Town Hall.

Civic Sunday

The event usually takes place in the early part of June, starting at St. Matthews Church for service (or a different church if the Mayor is not Church of England). This is followed by the Buns and Shilling ceremony in the town hall. Traditionally, this event was to introduce the Mayor to the people of Walsall, who would hand out a shilling and bun to pupils of the Blue Coat schools.

At homes

An afternoon tea at Walsall Town Hall, usually in the early part of July, to introduce the Mayoress to the people of Walsall. Representatives from local organisations and local dignitaries are invited.

Remembrance Sunday

Held on nearest Sunday closest to 11 November. The parade starts from Council House, followed by a service at Walsall Cenotaph. The Mayor lays wreath at Carless statue and at the Cenotaph. There is a salute past, and reception in Committee Room Suite.

Sister Dora service

A commemoration of the life and work of Sister Dora, held on the nearest Sunday to her birthday (16 January). Wreaths are laid at the Sister Dora statue, followed by a service at St. Paul's, followed by small reception in the Council House. Local dignitaries and health representatives are invited.

Walking the Fair

Reintroduced in 1996, this event is normally held middle of April. Traditionally, the Mayor used to declare the annual market open by parading up and down the streets. These days, the Mayor and a small number of guests walk and meet public and shop keepers in the main shopping precincts.

Ex-Mayors' supper

Ex Mayors and Mayoresses are invited to a buffet supper in Conference Room suite.

Second Civic Sunday

Follows the same lines as Civic Sunday but traditionally it is for the Mayor to introduce himself to the people in his own parish. Not every Mayor has this.

The Mayor’s Community and Excellence Awards

The Mayor’s Community and Excellence Awards show our gratitude to our very own local heroes. Who could be more worthy of an award other than someone who has made a positive difference?

We need you to tell us about the people in the Walsall community who have achieved great things or have gone above and beyond what is expected of them to make things happen.

These outstanding individuals can be any age and from any walk of life. Perhaps they are a child or adult who has displayed remarkable courage, a local champion who has improved your area, a tireless charity fundraiser, a campaigner, a dedicated care worker or someone who has gone that extra mile to help others. You can make your nomination online.

What happens after you’ve submitted your application?

Following the deadline, shortlisting will take place. If your nominee is a finalist, we may contact you for further information.

All nominations will be considered by an independent judging panel. Their decision is final.

We regret we will only be able to contact those who have been shortlisted.
